The Polytechnic of Namibia is one of two universities in Namibia. It’s focus is on applied science and technology. “Our mission is to contribute to sustainable national development through excellence in technologically-oriented career education and training, applied research and service.” The campus is located at 13 Storch Street in Windhoek, Namibia.
Institutions of higher education did not exist in Namibia until after 1980. Prior to that time, the only way students could pursue a college level education was to go to South Africa or other countries. For historical and economic reasons, this made a college education impossible for most Namibians. The fact that universities did not exist in Namibia before then is the main reason that there is now a shortage of trained of surveyors, land planners and land managers.
Several national vocational and technical schools were created in 1980, but it was not until after independence in 1990 that these schools were consolidated into two independent higher education institutions, the University of Namibia and the Polytechnic of Namibia. It was then that The Polytechnic became an independent and autonomous institution of higher education.
Dr.Tjama Tjivikua, the first and current Rector of The Polytechnic, was appointed on August 4, 1995. The first graduation ceremony was held on April 18, 1996 and the keynote address was delivered by Dr. Sam Nujoma, the SWAPO revolutionary and first President of The Republic of Namibia.
The Polytechnic’s governing structure includes the Council (the policy-making body), the Senate (which is responsible for the academic component of the institution), the Rector (its chief academic and administrative officer) and a Students’ Representative Council.
Today, The Polytechnic offers a variety of certificates, diplomas and degrees in nineteen programs ranging from Engineering and Information Technology to Natural Resource Management, Business Management, Tourism and Journalism.
